The VCU Department of Internal Medicine Rising Scholar Program is a unique opportunity to obtain dedicated training in Clinical and Translational Research, while progressing in your academic career in Internal Medicine and Subspecialties and improving clinical skills.

The program is designated for individuals who are BC or BE in Internal Medicine, and will last 24 months with a start date of July 1, 2019.  The program will combine formal training within the VCU Master of Science Program in Clinical and Translational Research with hands-on research experience under the tutelage of a dedicated mentor.  The Scholars will be appointed as Clinical Instructor of Medicine within the Internal Medicine faculty, the scholars will receive an excellent benefit package, a competitive salary commensurate to the clinical load, a stipend for CME and other scholarly activities and a grant to support an approved research project.

At the end of the program, trainees are expected to be competitive for appointment to an Assistant Professor Faculty position and for a KL2 or K23 NIH training grant.  Research Opportunities are available in the following areas: Allergy;Immunology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Hepatology, Hospital Medicine, Oncology and Pulmonology/Critical Care.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Faculty member will assist with undergraduate teaching.
  • Will conduct clinical, bench or population research in the context of a Masters' Program in Clinical Translational Research.
  • As an Instructor of Medicine, this position comes with privileges within the Hospital Medicine section and the trainee will be assigned a mandatory, limited number of hospitalist night shifts. The nights shifts will be limited to 14-16 hours per week, averaged over 4 weeks, within the Hospitalist Night Medicine Program.
  • Optional additional clinical component of training within the individual areas of interest.  This will be tailored to meet the need of the scholar but will not exceed 20% of the effort time.
  • Will have clinical privileges within the Hospital Medicine section.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BE/BE in Internal Medicine with prior research experience and interest in a career in Academic Medicine
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
