Hospitalist, VCU Health - Tappahannock, Virginia

The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hospital Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University, seeks a faculty hospitalist physician for our inpatient internal medicine service at VCU Tappahannock Hospital. VCU Tappahannock is a small, rural hospital embedded in a vibrant community on the banks of the Rappahannock River leading to the Chesapeake Bay. While the hospital is small in size with an average daily census in the low 20s, its affiliation with VCU Medical Center in Richmond brings academic expertise to a typically underserved community.

The hospitalists work in a seven-on, seven-off model with two weeks of day shifts followed by a week of night shifts. Daytime duties include admitting patients from the ED or outpatient setting, rounding and discharging on a daily service of 10-15 inpatients, and providing care to a small number of stepdown or intensive level of care patients with support of a virtual intensivist, and co-managing a handful of surgical patients. At night, the physician cross-covers the inpatient service and admits from the ED.

Residents from the VCU Internal Medicine residency program are sometimes present and other learners are welcome at the discretion of the faculty member. Key attributes to being successful in this role include a commitment to rural communities, independence, a desire to leverage academic expertise to improve the health status of rural communities, and a willingness to become part of a tight-knit, supportive community. Leadership opportunities may also be available.

Qualifications: Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine, experience managing complex inpatients, solid understanding of the hospitalist role and function, and demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse environment or commitment to do so.

Virginia Commonwealth University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
