Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantics most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracic services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the regions future cardiothoracic specialists. The current environment increasingly mandates leading both regional and national quality initiatives in cardiothoracic surgery. The division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty staff and students.
Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a general thoracic surgeon with excellent training in minimally invasive techniques to join a well-established 4-surgeon practice. The incumbent will fulfill several urgent needs of this division. The division performs all aspects of general thoracic surgery at VCU Medical Center and McGuire VA Medical Center, one of the largest VA hospitals in the country. This includes VATS lobectomy/segmentectomy, robotic assisted VATS resection, advanced endobronchial procedures like EBUS, ENB and rigid bronchoscopy. The medical center has a robust lung cancer-screening program and a weekly thoracic tumor board. The division also treats a large number of patients with benign and malignant esophageal diseases including MIE, GERD/paraesophageal hernia, POEM, EMR/stent/ablations etc.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching | Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in cardiothoracic surgery CT surgery residents, general surgery residents as well as medical and undergraduate students.
Research | Clinical research will be strongly encouraged. Opportunities for intramural and extramural funding will be explored with a goal towards extramural funding. Collaboration with basic science faculty in School of Medicine will be encouraged. Candidates with established funding will be strongly preferred.
Service | Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc. Their clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.
Required Qualifications:
- Board Certified/Eligible in Thoracic Surgery
- Virginia state licensure
- Training in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic/esophageal surgery ideal
- Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
- Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
- Research Interests in Cardiothoracic disorders that can lead to intramural and extramural funding
